In 2019, April 26 is still just a Friday. It's also, however, the day that Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters, and that makes it more than just any old Friday. The way that superhero worship and comic book lore have come to dominate American pop culture in recent decades, you kind of get the feeling that we might someday have holidays that honor the made-up sacrifices of Earth's made-up mightiest heroes. It's an open secret that Iron Man (probably) dies in the new movie. April 26 = Tony Stark Day?

Be Excellent to Each Other

Long ago in the middle centuries of the Roman imperial era, the emperor Septimius Severus died after appointing his two sons, Caracalla and Geta, to succeed him. The boys had an irreconcilable hatred of each other, and only managed to jointly rule the empire for about 11 months before Caracalla had Geta assassinated. Among his many other admirable qualities, former President Abraham Lincoln of "these United States" is often admired for his well documented sense of humor and fondness for jokes. There's a popular, probably apocryphal story that connects Lincoln and his keen wit to the five-dollar bill long before his face became permanently affixed to that particular mainstay of U.S. currency.
