Back in the 1880s and 1890s, the era, in the United States, of the first transcontinental railroads, poor workers used to follow rail lines from place to place in search of a job, a handout, or something better than whatever they'd left behind. A culture gradually grew up around these disadvantaged wanderers that persists to this day. Something about so-called "hobos" fires the imagination, and almost everyone is at least passingly familiar with bits and pieces of hobo lore.

Once upon a time one might have supposed that flamboyant singer and songwriter Elton John, 71 and still not letting the sun go down on he, would someday be best-remembered, years after his death, for one of his soaring rock ballads: "Candle in the Wind," "Tiny Dancer," "Rocket Man." Then in 1994 the energetic performer and eyewear pioneer collaborated with Walt Disney Studios on an animated movie about animals roaming free on the African savannah and "Circle of Life" was born.

One of the most rewarding things about working in information technology certification is observing the effects of the well-worn truism that knowledge is power. Power to change your circumstances. Power to rise above whatever challenging circumstances you may find yourself in. Power to discover, or simply create, a path to a better life. Knowledge is power, and certification helps you increase your stockpile of knowledge.

For people who are not independently wealthy, retirement is no sure thing. Not the way that, say, death and taxes are. It's like you can't quit your job before you die because you had to pay so much in taxes that you never managed to save anything for retirement. Who doesn’t like spring? New life is everywhere. Flowers are blooming, days are longer, soccer season is underway (the under-13-year-old teams I coach are tanned, rested, and ready!), and my Warriors are, as usual, poised to win it all.
