The Lessons of Beast Mode's Retirement

Posted by TestOut Staff on

Fans of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks had become accustomed, until the start of this season, to the success of their rushing attack. That’s largely thanks to one of the most dominant running backs of the decade — Marshawn Lynch. This year will be a little different for invested Seahawks fans, however, because “Beast Mode” surprised us all after the end of last season by announcing his retirement from football.

If there is one thing that is a constant in everyone’s life it’s change, and for Lynch he decided that the time had come for a new adventure. So what did this retired NFL star decide to do next? Appear on the popular reality TV show, Bear Grylls Running Wild, of course.

We’ve grown accustomed to watching Lynch run into opposing line backers to pick up the extra yard (or extra 67 yards). Now we get to watch him run down a wild pig. Does Lynch have a future in being an outdoorsman? Likely not, but when asked by Grylls why he chose to retire, Lynch taught us a profound lesson with his answer: “When it’s time, it’s time”.

Oftentimes we face the same realization in our respective careers when it’s time for a change. It can be hard to accept, because change is complicated ... but when it’s time, it’s time. CBT Nuggets recently posted a list of things you can look for to indicate whether it’s time to move on. The list is as follows:

  • You are not good at your job.
  • You hate the work.
  • Your work is not challenging.
  • Your job is stressing you out.
  • There is no room for advancement.
  • You are not being recognized.
  • Ethical or moral concerns.

If any of these attributes apply to your current career situation, then it may be time to take a sincere look at making a change. This isn’t a bad thing — it’s simply what you need. Lynch was in the prime of his career when he decided to pursue another path, maybe it’s time for you to follow his example into the uncertainty of leaving your job.

Whether you are wanting to embark on an IT career for the first time, or wanting to shift to a different IT career, certification is the way to go. It’s affordable, it’s fast, and courses are designed to help you through a transition period. If it’s time to change, or if change has been forced upon you, then go into beast mode and make it happen.
