More than 30 years ago, when lap top computers were the size of suitcases, I was a finalist for an important position in our nation’s capital. I wanted the job bad. One evening, the man I would be working for called and asked whether I knew how to use computers. His question caught me off guard, because I’d never seriously used one. I was stunned.

The origin of the phrase "Back to square one" is highly disputed among etymologists. Some believe the term derived from the popular board game Chutes and Ladders, while others claim its origins must come from the playground pastime hopscotch. Another popular theory is that the phrase originated with BBC radio commentators calling a game of football. (That's "soccer" to all of our American readers.)

Halloween began as a celebration of the western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It was a time of year dedicated to the remembering of the dead, especially saints, martyrs and other departed faithful. Over the years, pagan influences built upon the religious foundation of All Hallows’ Day, leading to the modern-day Halloween celebration.

When I drove up to my neighborhood Walmart last night and saw an abnormally crowded parking lot – I should have immediately turned my car around and sought shelter. I shrugged off the aberration and walked inside to complete my routine shopping stop.

It was the summer of 1975, and the movie Jaws was making a splash. Like most 12-year-old boys, I thought the idea of a monster from the deep was pretty cool, and I’ve been mesmerized by sharks ever since.
