Welcome to February, what some call the year’s “cruelest month.” It’s usually cold, typically dreary and generally makes one long for spring — which is still almost two months away. According to that unusually large marmot, Punxsutawney Phil, we can expect another six weeks of winter weather. (C’mon, Phil! Don’t be such a scaredy-cat. It’s just your shadow.)

The New England Patriots of 2018 are about one thing, and one thing only: winning football games. Most of the time over the past two decades, they have won far more than they have lost. Since 2001, the Patriots have had a winning record every season, have had the best record in their division (AFC east) 15 times, and have played in seven Super Bowls, winning five.

The No. 1 movie in U.S. theaters this past weekend was Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which kinda makes sense. If there was an actual cure for death, then you'd expect that to be No. 1 on most people's "I gotta find out more about this" list. Of course it would be nice to cure, say, cancer — but death itself? That's gonna win you some hearts and minds.

I’m a regular reader of the Bible and one of my favorite sections of scripture is Proverbs, in the Old Testament — probably because it reminds me of the things I should avoid doing ... again. A proverb is a short and often popular saying that “effectively expresses some commonplace truth.”

Exactly 94 years ago this week, athletes from 16 nations — Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United States, and Yugoslavia — gathered in the French resort town of Chamonix, at the foot of Mont Blanc, for the first-ever Olympic Winter Games. U.S. skater Charles Jewtraw won the first gold medal, on Jan. 26, in the 500-meter speed skate.
