Forearmed Is Forearmed

Let's face it: Almost none of us would knowingly show up to a gunfight. Both fighting and guns are unpredictable. You never know how a fight is going to go, and guns have an intimidating tendency to inflict lethal wounds, even if the shooter isn't necessarily intending to kill. On the other hand, if there were no conceivable way to avoid showing up for a gunfight, you'd want to bring your own gun, right? It would be singularly unwise to, as the saying goes, show up to a gunfight with a knife.

One of my favorite actors is Paul Giamatti. His performances John Adams and Cinderella Man are spot on. Whether screaming pugilistic encouragement to Russell Crowe or reluctantly accepting acting advice from a family of cinephiles, he always seems to sum the situation up with a sentence or two. In the 2015 disaster flick, San Andreas, Giamatti (son of former baseball commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti) plays Caltech seismologist, Dr. Lawrence Hayes.

Life Is Like an Imperfect Pool Table

Last week I played pool with a colleague and learned a valuable lesson about seeking employment. We played on a table that neither of us had ever played on. It didn’t take us long to realize this table was very unique. The cushion on the rails of the table had become separated from the wood in various places around the table. This created dead spots which caused any connecting ball to rebound in an unexpected manner.

"Rome wasn't built in a day." English writer John Heywood is generally credited with popularizing that phrase, though its precise origins are lost in the mists of time. Historians generally agree that it entered the English language as an already time-honored French proverb, which makes a certain amount of sense. French forebears knew about Roman conquest better than most, with ancient Gaul being a frequently contested holding first of the Roman Republic, and later of the Roman Empire.
